Hi Daniel,

Sorry for the obstruction. As explained in my email reply, it looks like you are unfortunately sharing an IP address with an anonymous vandal at User:82.3.32.75. That anonymous IP has previously made plenty of fine edits relating to the Singapore Navy in the past, but that was probably a different person. I'm guessing this IP is shared between several people on the same ISP. I've lifted the block early so that you can carry on editing. -- Solipsist 16:45, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Many thanks for removing that ban. It seems highly likely that my ISP shares out IPs, as you suggested. If this happens again in the future, or continues to happen, what would be the best plan of action? Daniel Lawrence 18:01, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)
At the moment, there is no perfect solution, but I believe the developers are looking into one. The interim solution is to put a notice about the shared IP on the IP-user page, so that other editors are aware of the problem in case further blocks are necessary (for example User talk:210.0.177.84). Do you know the name of the ISP, school or business which might be using this address? It looks like it might be an NTL proxy. -- Solipsist 10:25, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)
NTL is the ISP. I don't know about their policies of assigning IPs, but it seems to me that they're shared, and often changed. Not brilliant, is it. Makes me wonder what would happen if the British Phonographic Industry or similar wanted to prosecute someone for illegally downloading, for example. I don't know how they'd get the right person, or more importantly, avoid getting the wrong person.
And thanks for the welcome. Very kind. Daniel Lawrence 10:56, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Edit summary

[edit]

Dear contributor, first I would like to say a big thank you for your time, care, and enthusiasm in editing Wikipedia articles. I hope you find it just as much fun as I do.

I am writing with a small suggestion. I wonder if you could write an edit summary every time you make changes to an article (or when you start a new one). Even a short summary helps. To see how often you have done so in the past, you may go to http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Contributions&target=YOUR USERNAME.

Edit summaries are important for a number of reasons. Every time you change an article, a record of that change propagates to every single person who has that article on their watchlist. Most people have an article on their watchlist because they care a lot about it, so they would like to be informed about what is going on with it. Accurate summaries help people decide whether it is worthwhile for them to check a change. This is why your edit summary, which will take you maybe 15 seconds, is a time-saver and a great act of candor to the other people interested in the same article as you. Accurate edit summaries are important because they create trust regarding your contributions and help resolve disputes.

There are other, very convincing reasons for putting an edit summary. More information is available at Wikipedia:Edit summary. If at any point you have any questions about this rule (or anything else for that matter), please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you and happy editing! Hyacinth 23:51, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Actually, if you went to Wikipedia:Edit summary, you would find that you should:
  • "Always fill the summary field. Even a short summary is better than no summary. Accurate summaries help people decide whether it is worthwhile for them to check a change. Summaries often pique the interest of Wikipedians with an expertise in the area. This may not be as necessary for "minor changes", but (e.g.) "fixed spelling" would be nice even then."
Forgetting or neglecting to provide edit summaries is counterproductive. Hyacinth 20:03, 5 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I did not send the request to you randomly, nor did I just happen to notice a blank edit summary on my watchlist. The specific edit was: [1]. Thanks. Hyacinth 20:10, 5 Apr 2005 (UTC)

The 'bias' template isn't appropriate for this article, especially as you're added no explanation on the Talk page. The gushing tone should be dealt with by the cleanup & wikification. Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 21:57, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I'm not sure what more I can say. It's an overenthusuastic article about a children's television programme, probably written by a child. I felt bad enopugh putting the 'cleanup' & 'wikify' templates on it, and I plan to do the work myself as soon as possible; 'bias' is overkill. Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 22:01, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Posting Copyvios

[edit]

Daniel- apologies if you know this, but make sure to post links on WP:CP when you flag something as copyvio. Just doing the squiggle-bracket tag in the article itself does not post it to the copyvio page (I was making the same mistake until a few days ago). Feco 20:56, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)

yeah... the text makes you think it was an automatic-post. Sadly, no luck. We've been spoiled by the {}, which usually do something cool and automated.Feco
I've now made a suggestion at Template_talk:Copyvio to change the text of the template warning to be less confusing and remind users that they must manually post to WP:CP.Feco

Cassius

[edit]

Since I made the change without discussion, and since it was lack of discussion I that I objected to, I will revert it. The original change, however, was still made without appropriate discussion, as no discussion of the proposed move took place on the page's talk page. If such courtesy had been shown, I and possibly others could have registered our objection to such a move, as "Cassius" refers far more often to Caesar's assassin than to any other meaning, and in accordance with Wikipedia:Disambiguation should therefore carry a disambiguation notice at its top, linking either directly to the other articles in question or to a disambiguation page.

Of course, as you apparently did not note (but could have had pointed out, had you proposed your page move on the article's talk page), Gaius Cassius Longinus already has such a notice at its top, linking to Cassia (gens), which contains a list of a number of other Romans named "Cassius", all notable enough for inclusion in an encyclopaedia but nevertheless, like the band Cassius, are far less well-known than the assassin—and who were not listed on your disambiguation page, either as a group or by a link to the Cassia article.

Regardless of the disambiguation updates you made (though your diligence is greatly appreciated), Cassius remains better as a redirect because

  1. When a Wikipedia reader types the word "Cassius" in the search box, they should go directly to the article on the assassin, as that's by far the most likely article they're looking for.
  2. Links to Cassius are going to continue to be created in other articles, as users expect it work in accordance with Wikipedia:Naming conventions (ancient Romans) and because it has worked for years.

I also fail to see why you would assume that User:Mark's acceptance of the change would constitute acceptance by anyone else. Binabik80 23:27, 31 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Pocket Dragons

[edit]

Yay! Thanks for letting me know - thats nifty, and a good start too. I had thought of doing a pocket dragons page, but I get overly excited about it and start to take pictures of all my dragons, then I start to envision a Pocket Dragon WikiProject happening, then articles for each individual dragon along with Category:Pocket Dragons, then I get overwhelmed and give up :) I'll certainly watch this and expand it some soon. - Trysha 16:58, 25 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Short articles

[edit]

Hi, I noticed some of your new articles, like Daddies, Paxo, and Bisto. Without much context, I wonder why these are important. Do you think it would be appropriate to merge them into the main articles of their manufacturers? It's possible someone may come along and decide to try to delete them, since they're so short. Friday (talk) 20:37, 28 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Sun-Pat

[edit]

Firstly, I tweaked the wording to make the article encyclopedic. I removed information which was arguably irrelevant. More than one stub tag looks messy, so I chose to remove the least directly appropriate one. The article title (at the start, where it says Sun-Pat) needs to be italicised because it is a brand name. The accepted norm is for External links to be pluralised regardless of the number of links. Whether "links" ought to be capitalised is up for some debate.

I do hope this rationalises some of my edits and meets your concerns. Rob Church Talk | Desk 20:49, 28 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Dawn Fellowship

[edit]

Hi Daniel,

I was rather annoyed that you went & deleted the 'Dawn fellowship' page as 'spam', which I had just started work on (that night!!!). Please note that the 'Christadelphians' page in the discussion section an editor says that the different fellowships should start their own wiki page if they want to have more info on their history/beliefs. I had just emailed a friend for their suggestion on what to put for our history/beliefs & was going to get back to it today, but found your insulting comment about 'spam'. We have now started a new page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dawn_Christadelphians, and I hope you won't go & delete that too, and please don't go calling my religious beliefs 'spam' again.

[edit]

Hello. My name is Sean. I saw that you edited some stuff on my DragonBooster article such as some "vandalism" thing. I just want to know what that is you edited because I worked really hard on the article at first and I want it to be 100% accurate. Other people did work on it too and that was nice of them.

[edit]

Hello again. I recieved your response. i don't mind that you edited stuff on the article but I consider it to be "mine" because I was the first one to improve upon it and give it the stuff it needed. I would appriciate a bit of help here. someone called 3rkat as been editing my article since last month or way farther back (I heven't been on very much...) and i would just like to know what sort of vandalism occured on "my" article because it said that you reverted vandalism. I'm sorry if i was being inconsiderate and I apologize with all my heart.

Re: Dragon Booster Article:Mystery IP...

[edit]

Hey. I went over the response you showed me and saw what you wrote about another IP vandalizing the article. I thank you for telling me. I am not responsible for the vandalizim. I don't know and I don't know how my article could have been used for vandilism. I would really like to be friends with you and would like it if you helped me investigate this a bit. I want to have lots of fun on Wikipedia!!

Sorry I didnt see there was a good article, plus there was a bunch of discussion on the subject, so i didnt want to revert without input from someone else. I figured the npov tag was a good step towards a real bio and not a slanderous article. I have reverted the article to your previous edit. Image Tagging Image:Mike Batt.jpg

[edit]
Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Mike Batt.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, consider reading fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Image:Eurythmics.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Eurythmics.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. ShadowHalo 09:33, 10 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned fair use image (Image:The Poker Channel logo.gif)

Thanks for uploading Image:The Poker Channel logo.gif. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

This is an automated message- you have not upset or annoyed anyone. In the future, you may save yourself some confusion if you supply a meaningful file name and remember exactly which name you chose (file names are case sensitive, including the extension) so that you won't lose track of your uploads. Thanks for uploading Image:Bambee.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.Betacommand (talkcontribsBot) 19:07, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Discovery Real Time logo.gif. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self-no-disclaimers}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 19:07, 16 May 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.Betacommand (talkcontribsBot) 19:07, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:NGfL logo.gif. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Elvaston Castle

[edit]

I received an email from Freinds of Elvaston which explained the situation to me. The Elvaston Castle Estate Trust was dissolved at one of its meetings, and Friends of Elvaston have the minutes to verify this claim. I have written a reply asking them to provide these minutes. The ECET website is out of date and is not a link that is entirely needed, not to mention potentially damaging to actual Elvaston Estate societies. With your permission, I will remove the link for the time being. If the minutes are not provided I will restore the link. Feel free to discuss this wherever you choose, here, my talk page, the article talk page. Philip Gronowski Contribs 00:48, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In my opinion, the ECET website is needed. It contains a lot of information about Elvaston Castle and its history. Whether or not the group that made it still exist, the website is a valuable source of information.
Furthermore, if one was to include the information featured on the website in the article, then the website would have to be listed as a source.
What I find suspicious is how strongly the FoE want the other website removed from the article. It would make a lot more sense to write just a short section in the article about what people have done, and are doing to help save Elvaston Castle. This can include the history of the ECET, how it ceased to be, and how the FoE came about. Of course, I would worry if it were left to the FoE to write this, it would not be neutral (as per Wikipedia's guidelines), as they clearly have some sort of issue with the ECET.
In short, the website should stay, regardless of the FoE's reasons. --Daniel Lawrence 14:01, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I dunno, I understand why they would want the link removed. They certainly wouldn't want people contributing to a group which does not exist anymore while a current one is available. This link seems to show that ECET did dissolve and that FOE is a splinter group. Would putting a small warning after the link be to your liking? Something like this:
It lets readers know that the website is out of date, but still has enough info to stay on Wikipedia. Philip Gronowski Contribs 15:42, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
How can the history of Elvaston Castle be "out of date"? The website is a fantastic source of information about the castle and estate. As I said previously, there should be a small section in the article detailing how people have reacted to the plans to sell the estate. This could include history of the ECET and FoE, and that would be perfectly fine as long as it is neutral. Then there would be no need for comments after the external links.
Also, regarding the link you gave me, did you happen to notice this sentence: "They had been invited to the final meeting in order to resolve some internal matters that had arisen due to their parting of the ways". I said before that it was suspicious why FoE would so strongly want that website removing, and now we have a reason. Personal disputes. What are you betting if I wrote that into the article it would be constantly removed, just like the external link?
If someone doesn't want something mentioned or linked to on an article, then it's tough. If it is relevant and true, then it goes on. That's how Wikipedia works - things don't get removed just because someone doesn't want it there. There is clearly a great deal behind FoE's passion to destory any mention of the ECET, and they are using Wikipedia as a battleground. --Daniel Lawrence 16:05, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I completely forgot about this until a recent e-mail. Ok, information regarding what is going to happen to the castle may be out of date, so my previous suggestion still stands. They may not want the website to be thought of as an official website, which is what my text after the links clarifies. I'll change around the sentence a bit as well, so that "information regarding the current Estate may be out of date". I believe it to be a fair compromise, as I said earlier, it allows readers to know that the group is defunct, yet still has information regarding the history of the estate. Orphaned Fair use
Orphaned Fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Windows Server 2008 box shot.jpg.

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. —Remember the dot (talk) 20:47, 9 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Garry_Schyman.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.

Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 7 days after this notification, per our Fair Use policy. Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Garry Schyman, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Garry Schyman is unquestionably copyright infringement, and no assertion of permission has been made.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Garry Schyman, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Speedy deletion of Image:Beautiful Corrs.jpg

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Image:Beautiful Corrs.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I6 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a non-free image with no fair use rationale uploaded after May 4, 2006 which has been tagged as not having a rationale for more than 7 days.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the article (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on [[Talk:Image:Beautiful Corrs.jpg|the article's talk page]] explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Replaceable fair use Image:Lisa_Lougheed.jpg

[edit]
Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Lisa_Lougheed.jpg. I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.

AfD nomination of Pokémart

[edit]

Pokémart, an article you created, has been nominated for deletion. We appreciate your contributions. However, an editor does not feel that Pokémart satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in the nomination space (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and the Wikipedia deletion policy). Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Pokémart and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of Pokémart during the discussion but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion discussion. Thank you. Judgesurreal777 04:32, 2 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Another editor has added the "{{prod}}" template to the article Rawhead Rexx, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia or discuss the relevant issues at its talk page. If you remove the {{prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Orphaned non-free media (Image:Pokémon World.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Pokémon World.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Community Channel logo.gif

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Community Channel logo.gif. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 21:53, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. This message is to inform you that an article that you wrote recently, Matthew Kirk, has been tagged with a notability notice. Proposed deletion of Rawhead Rexx

[edit]

The article Rawhead Rexx has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Although this could simply be moved to Helloween's article, there's not much to suggest it because my searches found nothing at all and it seems there's no considerably noticeable connection between the two and that's not surprising as it seems this particular band was not largely active and otherwise widely known.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
